Lunch with a local – Yellow Fin Seafood Restaurant, Davao City

Posted in Chowtime, Travels

Thanks to Travbuddy.com, I was able to connect with a Davao local! I guess I can now say I’m used to traveling alone, but I do recognize the value of advice from someone who lives right in the place. This is what I had hoped for when I contacted several Davaoeño Travbuddies. A lunch meetup exceeded my expectations, as Jeff offered to take me to his friend’s restaurant, Yellow Fin.

I guess Yellow Fin is a popular seafood place in Davao, as it is on the Davao City tourist map. The place was near full when we went there. The owner, Jeff said, is also into food photography, which is why he wanted to take me there and meet him. As luck would [not] have it, this friend had left town that day but Jeff and I went in anyway as we went for the seafood in the first place.

We had a couple of their house specialties -

Grilled Tuna Belly

Grilled Tuna Belly – fresh, juicy, tender and grilled perfectly!

Greaseless Chicken

Yellow Fin signature Greaseless Chicken – it tasted as promised, not greasy but very flavorful

Garlic Butter Shrimps

Tuna "Testicles"???

Itlog sa ‘laki nga tuna” = Tuna “Testicles”???

This had to be the highlight of lunch. Raw, it looked like roe that I’m familiar with since childhood. But Jeff had a funny look on his face while trying to explain to me what it was. When I asked, the lady at the counter said, “itlog sa ‘laki nga tuna”. And I went, “Tuna testicles?? Interesting!” One side was about a foot long and it was grilled and served to us on a sizzling plate. It was yummy – a bit chewy with kind of a cheesy texture.

I was skeptical about what it really was, so I searched it and found this: Soft Roe
